Dry Skin Facts - Dry Skin Information - Dry Skin Treatments
Dry skin affects at least one in five of the population. Dry skin can feel tight and uncomfortable after washing, it may flake, crack and in severe cases, even bleed. But dry skin needn't make life a misery.

Ordinary dry skin (xerosis) usually isn't serious, but it can be uncomfortable and unsightly, turning plump cells into shriveled ones and creating fine lines and wrinkles long before you're due. More serious dry skin conditions, such as the inherited group of disorders called ichthyosis, can sometimes be disfiguring and may cause psychological distress to people living with them.
Fortunately, most dry skin results from environmental factors that can be wholly or partially controlled. These include exposure to hot or cold weather with low humidity levels and to wind, long-term use of air conditioning or central heating, excessive bathing, especially tub baths, and the use of strong soaps or detergents. Metabolic changes that occur with normal aging or with certain medical conditions also can affect the moisture content of your skin.
Chronic or severe dry skin problems may require a dermatologist's advice. But you can do a lot on your own to improve your skin, including drinking more water, showering less, and above all, moisturizing, moisturizing, moisturizing
Dry skin can be a temporary problem — one you experience only in winter, for example — or a lifelong concern. And although skin is often driest on your arms, lower legs and the sides of your abdomen, this pattern can vary considerably from person to person. What's more, signs and symptoms of dry skin depend on your age, your health status, your locale, the amount of time you spend outdoors, and the cause of the problem.
What is dry skin?
Dry skin is a very common skin problem. For some people it may be a symptom of a hereditary or chronic dry skin condition such as eczema, psoriasis or contact dermatitis. For others, it is something that they suffer from at some point in their lives. Different people suffer to a different degree, but generally the same symptoms occur.
The symptoms of dry skin can be:
1
a rough dry texture which sometimes flakes and may cause itching
2
calloused skin
3
cracked and fissured skin
4
red, chapped and sore skin
5
rawness and tightness
Where dry skin is a symptom of eczema, it can often be accompanied by a severe itching (pruritus). If scratched, this can cause infection, which once more can lead to itching. This itch-scratch-inflammation cycle can be hard to break but there are emollients which can help. If the itch is the major symptom, specially formulated emollients with anti-itch ingredients, should be used.
Common Causes
Dry skin is common. It happens more often in the winter when cold air outside and heated air inside cause low humidity. Forced-air furnaces make skin even drier.
The skin loses moisture and may crack and peel, or become irritated and inflamed. Bathing too frequently, especially with harsh soaps, may contribute to dry skin. Eczema may cause dry skin.
Factors which contribute to dry and cracked skin include:
1
inherited factors
2
metabolic factors such as an under-active thyroid gland, or excessive weight loss
3
increasing age, resulting in decreased natural lubrication
4
cool weather, especially when windy or the humidity is low
5
air conditioning, central heating or sitting close to a fire or fan heater
6
excessive bathing, showering or swimming, especially in strongly chlorinated hot or cold water
7
contact with soap, detergents and solvents
8
frictional irritation and chapping.
Home Care
It may help to change your bathing habits:
1
Keep baths or showers short.
2
Use warm (not hot) water.
3
Use as little soap as possible. Limit its use to face, armpits, and genitals if you can. Try mild cleansers like Aveeno or Cetaphil or mild soaps like Neutrogena or Dove.
4
Dry your skin thoroughly but gently -- pat, DON'T rub.
5
Take baths or showers less often.
Also, increase skin and body moisture:
1
Use bath oils and moisturizers at least daily. Thick, greasy moisturizers work best. Avoid products with alcohol. Apply just after a bath or shower, when your skin is still damp.
2
Use a humidifier if the air is dry.
3
Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Apply cool compresses to itchy areas, and try over-the-counter cortisone creams or lotions if your skin is inflamed. If this is not enough, talk to your doctor about possible prescription lotions.
Treatment of dry skin
An important aspect of treatment is to identify and tackle any contributing factors
1
Reduce how often you bath or shower, and use lukewarm water. Showers may be better than baths.
2
Replace standard soap with a substitute such as a synthetic detergent cleanser, water-miscible emollient, bath oil, anti-pruritic tar oil, etc.
3
Apply an emollient liberally and often, particularly after bathing, and when itchy. The drier the skin, the thicker this should be, especially on the hands.
4
Treat eczematous patches with a topical steroid for a 5 to 15 day course. These are prescribed by your doctor and should be only applied to the red and itchy areas.
Long term control
Dry skin is usually a long term and recurring problem, especially in winter. When you notice your skin getting dry, resume your lubricating routine and use a non-soap cleanser. If the itchy dry-skin rash returns, use both the lubricating routine and the prescription steroid cream or ointment.
